The US Gulf of Mexico region extends from the Florida Keys westward to the southern tip of Texas, following the coasts of five states with a combined coastline of over 47,000 miles ( The Gulf of Mexico at a Glance: A Second Glance ). Throughout history, the Gulf of Mexico has provided food, transportation, and recreation to its residents. It has also provided them with the challenges of natural disasters including the most costly weather event in U.S. history - Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
